Brooke was just minding her own business, wandering the streets of the beautiful town she had only just moved to. Stormy Creek was a quaint town that Brooke had almost instantly fallen in love with. She hadn’t really met anyone yet but was hoping she would fit in like a match in a matchbox.
She was about to enter the only coffee shop in town. The bell above the door tinkled and a boy bumped right into her- spilling coffee all over her white blouse.
She looked up, staring into the boys striking blue eyes. She felt her own eyes widen in shock before turning fiery. She couldn’t contain it; “What on earth did you do that for?” Only after saying such a thing did she realise how stupid she sounded.
“Well, if I were to answer that question exactly..........Actually I have no way to answer that.” His eyes turned on her pitifully as he took in the state of her clothes. “Maybe you could join me for some coffee?”
Brooke bit her lip, “Well...since you asked......”

Not ten minutes later; Brooke had found herself seated across from the boy in a cosy little booth. They were both sipping their coffee, looking anywhere but at each other. He was the first to break the silence, “I’m Henri, Henri Deft.”
“Brooke. Just call me Brooke.” She giggled nervously. She brushed a golden strand of hair behind her ear before continuing, “I can think of a few better ways we could have met.”
The door to the little cafe opened then; letting in a cold gust of wind. Brooke shivered as the wind ran through her hair. Henri of course had noticed and was now removing his jacket, he handed it to her. As Brooke slipped her arms through, Henri continued speaking. “So......... are you attending the old crumbly building atop the hill?”
Brooke sighed, “I find it better described in the words charming and beautiful...........but yes, St. James academy will be my home for the next few years.”
“Same here.” He paused, “Say, are you new here?”
“Was it that obvious?”
“No, I just haven’t seen you around before.”
“Well obviously you’ve been living here a while........” She was cut off by Henri.
“Yep, my whole life. 15 years to be exact.” He winked.
“Know of any great spots?”
“Depends.....is your taste for loud and fun or quiet and charming?
“Beautiful scenery is my place.”
Henri paused, seeming to debate over something. “I think there’s something I should show you.” He held out his hand and led the way.

After a good 20 minutes of walking they had arrived.
Brooke watched as the waves rolled across the sand. She was fascinated at the world of colours; everything seemed to have a new definition here. It was a deserted stretch of paradise.
Brooke startled as Henri walked up beside her, “Is this a beautiful spot or what?” He murmured.
“I wish there were words to describe....................” She trailed off as she turned to face Henri.
“But, there’s something else.”
“Go on.”
“I feel I can trust you.”
Brooked Scoffed, “That’s cool, was there something else you wanted to say?”
“Yes, actually. Just don’t freak out.”
“Do I look like I’m a one to freak out? Just say it.”
Henri didn’t reply with words. He closed his eyes, pressing his index fingers to his temples. In that moment everything seemed to change.
Henri seemed to ascend from the ground; he was rising steadily- levitating. He was over a meter above Brooke before she realised what was happening. As he came back down towards her she swore she saw a flash of gold in his eyes.
“What........are........you?” Brooke stuttered out.
“I’m magic.” Henri winked, “When I saw you I could tell you had the power too. I can teach you, if you want?”
-*-
A few hours later everything made sense. Not only would Brooke keep his secret but she found that she too could be like Henri. She knew it was dangerous, she knew it was absurd; but one thing she knew for sure was that she had the power in her.
