Grants
Funding can be obtained from a variety of different bodies. Types of grants vary widely and can include funds to:
- research to develop new work
- complete a manuscript
- travel assistance, either interstate or overseas
- professional development: workshops, conferences or masterclasses
- assist writers with a disability
- assist writers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent
- mentoring ...
- and more
Each organisation has different rules and procedures, so it’s best to contact them directly to see what they offer, their eligibility criteria and how to go about applying. Grants can be age or location specific, so you need to make sure that you’re applying for the right one – visiting the funding body’s website is a good place to start:
- Arts SA for residents of South Australia
- Country Arts SA for regional assistance
- Australia wide it's the Australia Council for the Arts
- some local councils also provide support in certain circumstances
- another useful site is GrantsLINK
You will need referees and letters of support in some cases. The competition is stiff and grant applications require attention to detail. You will be required to acquit your grant, a process which requires you to write a report stating how you’ve used and benefited from the funding.
